Part 2; the next steps

The next morning, neither of us mentioned what had happened at first.
We moved through breakfast almost normally, passing the coffee and talking about ordinary things. But underneath the conversation was an unspoken awareness that something between us had changed.
Finally, my wife looked across the table.
“Do you regret it?”
I thought about the question.
“No,” I said. “But I think I was more jealous than I expected.”
She nodded. “I was nervous too.”
That answer surprised me.
“You were?”
“Of course.” She reached across the table and took my hand. “I wasn't wondering whether I wanted someone else. I was wondering whether you would still look at me the same afterward.”
I squeezed her hand.
“I do.”
She smiled, and the tension between us softened.
Over the following weeks, we found ourselves talking more openly than ever. We discussed what we had liked, what had made us uncomfortable, and what we might change if we ever did it again.
Eventually, she asked the question we'd both been avoiding.
“Would you do it again?”
I looked into her eyes.
“Only if we both wanted it.”
She smiled.
“Then maybe we should.”
This time, there was no uncertainty about what we were considering. We knew the boundaries. We knew the risks. And most importantly, we knew that our marriage came first.
When the evening finally arrived, I watched her get ready, noticing the confidence in the way she carried herself. She caught me staring in the mirror.
“What?” she asked playfully.
“Nothing.”
She laughed. “You were staring.”
“I was thinking how lucky I am.”
Her expression softened.
She walked over, kissed me, and whispered, “Remember—whatever happens tonight, I come home with you.”
And somehow, those few words made me feel calmer than anything else could have.
The doorbell rang.
We looked at each other.
Neither of us moved for a moment.
Then my wife reached for my hand.
Together, we went to answer it.
